What Is an ADU? Everything Charlotte Homeowners Need to Know
Our Family’s Path to Building an ADU
Families today are stepping back and re-evaluating how they live together for many reasons. Rising home prices, increasing rental costs, and a renewed appreciation for multi-generational living are leading many families to consider new housing solutions. For us, that solution was building an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU).
Our original vision was to purchase a piece of land where each family could have an acre or more—separate, yet close enough to enjoy daily life together. We spent countless hours searching for the perfect property in the perfect location at a price that made financial sense. Like many families, we discovered that finding all three was much more difficult than we anticipated.
Instead of continuing the search, we took a different path. We decided to invest in the property we already owned and build an ADU in our backyard.
Looking back, it turned out to be one of the best decisions our family has ever made.
Today, our daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren live in the primary home, while my husband and I live in our beautiful backyard ADU. We each have our own private living space while enjoying the benefits of being just steps away from one another.
The grandchildren don’t have to schedule a visit to see Grams and Grampy—they simply run across the patio whenever they want to spend time together. We enjoy family dinners, celebrations, and everyday moments that would have been much more difficult if we lived across town. We have the independence of separate homes with the closeness that only family can provide.
Building our ADU wasn’t just a construction project—it was an investment in our family’s future, our relationships, and our quality of life.
As both a homeowner who has personally experienced the process and a licensed General Contractor and real estate professional, I understand the excitement, questions, and challenges that come with planning an ADU. My goal is to help other families discover whether this type of living arrangement could be the right solution for them.
What Is an ADU?
Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are quickly becoming one of the most popular ways for Charlotte homeowners to add living space, increase property value, and create new opportunities for multigenerational living or rental income. Whether you call it a backyard cottage, carriage house, granny flat, or guest house, an ADU is a fully independent residential living space located on the same property as a primary home.
An ADU includes the essential features of a home, such as a kitchen, bathroom, living area, and sleeping space. It can be attached to the main residence, built above a garage, converted from existing space, or constructed as a detached building in the backyard.
Why Are ADUs Becoming So Popular in Charlotte?
As housing costs continue to rise and families look for more flexible living arrangements, ADUs offer a practical solution. Homeowners are using them to provide housing for aging parents, create independent living space for adult children, welcome long-term guests, establish private home offices, or generate rental income while increasing the overall value of their property.
For many families, an ADU offers something even more valuable than additional square footage—it creates a way to stay connected across generations while allowing everyone to maintain their own independence and privacy.
Is Your Property a Good Candidate?
Not every property is the same. Factors such as lot size, zoning regulations, setbacks, utility connections, easements, and neighborhood requirements all influence whether an ADU can be built. A professional site evaluation is the best first step to determine what is possible and identify the most efficient path forward.
